Mini-OE to Germany–Day 7
The pictures above are some impressions of Rheinstetten Forchheim where I grew up.
Today is my mum’s birthday. We went to town with my dad and got some flowers and things for breakfast. I still get excited visiting all the bakeries and butcher shops.
We had the usual breakfast I remember so well from my childhood. Breakfast on the weekend was our most important family event. After breakfast I helped my mum with some MS Excel stuff she needs to monitor her blood. She had several thrombosis over the years and needs to take medication. But I should better say “We wasted some time with crap computer issues” so I will not soil this travel report with this stuff.
On to more positive things.
After we were fed up with computer stuff we decided to go for a walk. Where my parents live and I grew up there was a community of poultry breeders. The club has an area where people spend their weekends breeding all sorts of birds and also creating gardens and enclosures for their fowl. This was always a thing we did when we still lived with our parents. You took your stale bread, fed the ducks and chicken and they even have some deer and meanwhile goats. The site is still very nice in most areas but they have a big problem. People have changed and don’t want to spend time with these things anymore. We also learned this when talking to friends. There is no new blood within those clubs and communities. Many events we loved so much have disappeared. There aren’t enough volunteers to man stalls and BBQs.
On our way back we stopped at a bakery and had some coffee and cake outside while the trams were passing by.
I met my brother again after 13 years. We both had tears in our eyes. You need to know that my brother is scared of flying. Not the best condition for a 24 hour flight to New Zealand. So he never came to visit us and probably won’t visit us in the nearest future.
Sometimes we find out how close we are with people after we haven’t seen them for a while and then meet again. This is how I felt when I saw my brother again. Of course we “saw” each others using skype and spoke on the phone. But actually seeing him again and hugging him yes, men hug each others in Europe – I felt how much I have missed him and how I love him.
We went out for dinner at the Zollhaus in Neuburgweier to celebrate my mum’s birthday. We were joined by my brother and his wife Waltraud. We had a great time unfortunately not matched by a great meal. My mums roast was raw on the inside and I found a hair in my sauce. Ah well it didn’t really matter because we had a great time together and watched the ships going past on the river Rhine.
